My Favorite Spot on a Sunday Afternoon
To Party, After Party, or Just Chill Out.
Two years ago I was introduced to the weekly festivities that go down every Sunday at Cherry Beach during the summer. These were the days when I was partying pretty hard. Needless to say, me and my friends were leaving Guvernment at around 7am and being the party animals that we were, we weren’t ready to call it a night (or a morning in this case). So one of my friends said “why not go to Cherry Beach”, and this is when I discovered my favorite Sunday pass time (aside from maybe boat cruises) in Toronto.
Cherry Beach is located at the foot of Cherry St. (See Map Below, note it is called Clarke Beach Park on the map) which is located about a five minute drive east of Yonge Street just south of Lakeshore. It is comprised of, you guessed it, a beach, as well as a beautiful park with trees and what not surrounding it. There is tons of parking and usually a Chip Truck (truck that sells hot dogs and fries and what not) as well as public washrooms.

Anyways every Sunday morning there is always a good 40 or more people that make their way to Cherry beach to continue partying from the night before. This usually consists of people blasting music from their cars and dancing around and talking and what not. Sometimes this can get a little annoying as when you have 5 different groups of people all wanting to play their own music from their own cars, the sounds can clash. Nevertheless by mid-afternoon a promotional group called Promise brings in generators, a DJ set up, and a sound system, and sets it all up. Generally this is when things become a little more organized and harmonious.

So from around 3pm until midnight people come, either to party, just chill out, or even are still partying from the night before (yes there are some hardcore party animals that party for 24+ hours straight, I’ve seen them). Weather depending, there are usually anywhere from 100 people and even upwards to 800 people. You have a good mix of hippies, hipsters, ravers, clubbers, dog walkers, and just everyday normal people (if there is such a thing?). The atmosphere is very laid back and positive, and you get a variety of music from house to drum and bass to jungle to tribal and all sorts of other stuff.
Promise’s facebook group says, “Bring a frisbee, bring a kite, bring a handy sweater, bring a dog (only nice dogs), bring your lover and a hammock. And pass the time on this lazy sunny Sunday afternoon with friends and friends of friends”. Basically you can find whatever you are looking for in Sundays at Cherry Beach, be it a party, an after party, or just a place to chill out, that’s what I like so much about it. Oh and did I mention it’s FREE. The only thing they ask is that you bring reusable containers for your drinks and food (if your bringing food/drinks), absolutely no glass (no one wants to step on broken glass), bring a positive attitude, and have fun.

Anyways on Long weekends, the weekly party is moved to Mondays instead of Sundays, but other then that it runs just about every Sunday throughout the summer (May Long Weekend – Labor Day) , except for rainy days. I could go on for another couple pages describing Sundays at Cherry Beach but I’m going to spare you and just advise you to go check it out for yourself.

The official kick off of Promise Cherry Beach Sundays is this coming MONDAY (long weekend so it’s on a Monday not a Sunday) May 17th. Promise has brought together a pretty dope line-up for this weekend. Here are the details;
