6:30am Monday Morning: Düsseldorf, Germany
Right now is one of those times when you want to kick my self in the butt. I just arrived at Düsseldorf airport 6:30am German time, 12:30am Toronto time, and decided to whip out my laptop and write a review of the flight, seeing as I have a five-hour layover until I fly out to Budapest. I pulled out the laptop, charger cable, and Europe-to-North American power converter, only to realize that the converter doesn’t except North American three-prong cords (only the two-prong cords that don’t have a ground). So now I’m in a dilemma as to;
a) Find a Mac dealer and by a European charger cord.
b) Find a Mac dealer that has the European outlet piece that can be used with my North-American charger (if you have a Mac laptop you will know about the little piece that I’m talking about).
c) Try and find a North-American-to-European power converter that will except a three prong North –American cord.
Anyways a mere bump in the road, if it wasn’t for such inconveniences things wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. Besides I’m sure in the next 5-hours of waiting for my connecting flight I will be able to come up with something.
The flight over (Toronto to Düsseldorf) was roughly 7-hours or so. I flew on Lufthansa, and airline I had never flown with before. I have to say it was one of the better flights I have taken in my various travels. First and for most it was open bar, which always makes a long flight go by faster. That definitely won some brownie points with me. On top of the half-dozen or more Jack & Cokes, came two meals (dinner & breakfast). The meals were pretty typical airline food. The dinner consisted of roast beef with salad, potatoes, green beans, a bun, and an apple cheesecake for desert. Breakfast included a fruit cup, breakfast bar, cheddar cheese, and a roll. Quality of the food was pretty typical of what you’d expect on a plane, not terrible but not great.
Each seat had individual monitors, which is also always a nice feature that many take for granted (I didn’t have this luxury on my 8-hour flight to Brazil last February). The selection wasn’t the best, but I watched “He’s Just not that into you” “Transporter 3” “Bedtime Stories” as well as some old-skool cartoons and a James Brown live in concert from 30 some years ago or so. Again they didn’t have the greatest selection, but I’ll definitely give a passing grade for having individual screens.
I got a middle seat, which could have sucked, but the seats were decently spaced out so it wasn’t to bad. The last time I flew to Europe I flew Air Transat, and let me tell you, Air Transat is a lot more cramped and less comfortable. Keep in mind if you are looking for sweet deals on flights to Europe from Toronto, Air Transat is definitely your best bet.
That about sums up the flight, all in all flying with Lufthansa wasn’t to bad, and I would probably recommend it. Before I burn out the battery on my laptop, I’m going to conclude this post. I know it wasn’t the most exciting blog, trust me I would have loved to been able to tell you I joined the mile high club or that I was sitting beside Vince Vaughn, but at least it was somewhat informative. Until next time…
9am Tuesday Morning: Budapest, Hungary
So I wandered around down town Düsseldorf for a few hours in search of a solution to my laptop charger issue, to no avail. In the end, I just ripped off the third prong and plug in the cord and it worked.
But on to more interesting things. After wandering around Düsseldorf for a few hours between my flights, I then hopped onto my flight to Budapest, arriving at around 4 in the afternoon. Once I landed I took a city bus to downtown to the “All Central Hostel” which I had booked a bed for the night before I left. It is a fairly nice hostel, clean, nice staff, free wi-fi, and awesome location, all for $18 CND.
One of the best parts about hostels is meeting people. And last night I met a whole bunch of Britts and a Newzelander that also happen to be going to Exit Fest. We went to this local pub and had a few beers, despite massive jet lag and sleep deprivation that I was dealing with. Fun night regardless.
I have to say Budapest has some of the best looking girls in Europe. It is ridiculous how many beautiful women there are here. I’m hoping to hunt down the future Mrs. Neilson-Belman today lol, ok maybe not a wife but I wouldn’t mind making a Hungarian “friend” or two ;) . Anyways I know this post is lacking pictures but I’ll try to include some in my next post.
